Na maanden van acties en protest van de studentenbeweging en de bredere onderwijscoalitie heeft de regering eindelijk ingegeven aan onze eis om de langstudeerboete niet in te voeren. Vanmiddag heeft het kabinet in hun “laatste bod” deze verschrikkelijke maatregel ingetrokken, terwijl er nog steeds een monsterlijke 1.35 miljard euro aan bezuinigingen voorgelegd wordt. Dat betekent dat er desastreus gesneden wordt in onderwijs en onderzoek, dat banen en volledige opleidingen nog steeds op de tocht staan.
Ongeacht wat de oppositie doet met dit bod, zal AKKU doorgaan met actievoeren. Niet enkel totdat het kabinet-Schoof haar aanval op ons onderwijs staakt en de gehele bezuinigingen van tafel zijn, maar ook totdat er een structurele verhoging is van de basisbeurs, de rente op de studieschuld wordt geschrapt en de pechgeneratie volledig wordt gecompenseerd!
Er vindt momenteel een politiek spel plaats, waarbij het intrekken van de meest controversiële bezuiniging – de langstudeerboete – gebruikt wordt om de oppositie in te laten stemmen met de rest van de bezuinigingen. Studenten, leraren en werknemers zullen zich echter niet tegen elkaar uit laten spelen. Onze eisen zijn duidelijk. We zullen deze overwinning gebruiken om onze strijd door te zetten totdat alle bezuinigingen van tafel zijn!

Long study fine is off the table, but our struggle continues!
After months of action and protest by the student movement and the broader education coalition, the government has finally given in to our demands to refrain from carrying out the fine. This afternoon, the cabinet has withdrawn this disastrous policy, leaving a monstrous 1,35 billion euro cut. This means that education and research will still be horribly affected, and that jobs and entire studies still are threatened.
Whatever the opposition does now with this proposal, we will still take action. Not only until this government stops the attack on education, and all cuts are off the table, but till the base grant is structurally raised, the interest on studyloans is taken away, and the entire generation that could only lend money to finance their studies is compensated.
Right now, a political game is played. By refraining from the most controversial cuts, the government tries to go on with the rest of their cuts. Students, teachers and other employees will however stay united. Our demands are clear. We will use this victory to continue our struggle, until all cuts are off the table!
